Vintage Brompton 1992–97 M5R 5-Speed – Black – Modified with Swytch Conversion Kit
This is a vintage 1990s (for more date info see below) Brompton (Touring 5-Speed) folding bicycle in a classic Black colour way.
Factory-built 5-speed models from this golden era are becoming increasingly rare and are highly prized by classic bicycle enthusiasts.
This bike was modified in 2021 with the addition of a Swytch conversion kit to make it electric. The Swytch kit is included (see photos). Swytch kit reference is ECO Kit, Brompton Motor, 349 Rim Size, Silver: KIT-ECO-NAR-349-S. Untested.
Key Specifications & Features of Brompton bike:
  • Year of Manufacture: Unsure of exact year, as the silver serial number sticker is missing. See last photo, which gives 6534 as the frame number. This is an early model, but I've been unable to date this precisely, however see gear hub notes below. Also seen in photo is the BS6102 compliance stamp.
  • Model/Gearing: 5-speed configuration featuring the original Sturmey-Archer "5 Star" 5-Speed internal gear hub controlled by the classic factory-stamped thumb shifter. The gear hub has stamped on it "Sturmey Archer - 5 Star * Gear System – Made in England 92–7", hence I'm assuming the date of the bike is 1992-1997.
  • Handlebars: Classic M-Type (Mid-rise) handlebars offering a highly comfortable, upright riding position. They have a cross bar from left to right handle, which I've read was an addition after a 1997 safety report, so that might date the bike to 1997?
  • Includes: Original aluminium rear luggage touring rack and full mudguards.

The bike has been much used over the years and is showing many signs of wear in line with its age and use – paint chips, rust around the seat bolts, tyres need replacing or TLC, some of the cables are frayed, etc – please see photos which form part of the description, and message if you would like more or specific photos.

The frame seems structurally solid with no cracks or damage. The iconic folding mechanism operates smoothly as it should. The brake levers and handlebars seem intact to me (no expert).
