Folda” folding bikes sold in the UK during the late 1970s and early 1980s were generally branded under the Phillips Cycles name, which by then was part of the larger Raleigh Bicycle Company group. One surviving example is the “Phillips Folda 1982” model.
Like many folding bikes of that era, the actual frame manufacturing was often outsourced or shared between factories in Britain and continental Europe, especially Poland, Italy, and East Germany. The simple U-frame / shopper-style folding designs were widely copied and rebadged under many names.
The Folda bikes themselves were fairly basic commuter/shopping bikes:
* steel frame
* 20-inch wheels
* usually Sturmey-Archer 3-speed hubs
* heavy but durable
* designed for caravans, boats, trains, and small flats
They were competitors to bikes like:
* the Raleigh Bicycle Company Twenty/Stowaway
* Brompton Bicycle (later, more advanced)
* Dahon (from 1982 onward)
* Bickerton portable bikes
So the short answer is:
* the “Folda” name was mainly associated with Phillips/Raleigh in Britain,
* but the actual production may have involved contracted European factories, which was very common for folding bikes in that period.
Sturmey Archer rear drum with 3 speed shifter on handlebar ( finest British still widely used even today)
