Custom Brompton Folding bike - homage to 1989 Cal look VW Karmann Ghia
£1,179.70 GBP
The base for the project was a B75 bike purchased brand new in 2020. This was the cheapest basic brand new model available at the time - about £870 from memory.
I stripped the paint, cleaned up some parts of the frame - eg removing the front luggage mount, flatting off the top of the hinge section to take the graphics better and smoothing out some other areas. I left the frame attachments for the 3 speed gear linkage so that could be added if preferred later.
I added Brommie Mods aluminium mudguards - stripped and painted. These hold their shape much better than the plastic ones.
The paint scheme is old skool - no vinyl here - I marked and masked it all and airbrushed each colour and then buried it all in 2K clear coat, then flatted back smooth and polished, so it is a professional quality paint job. I can't begin to tell you how long all of this took to do!
For all of the plain aluminium parts - handlebars, cranks, brakes, wheel rims - any anodizing was removed and then they were flatted down to a smooth finish and polished.
The wheels are custom 21 spoke at the rear and 14 at the front.
Rear gear is 13 tooth, chain ring is 44.
Weight is 10.5kg
It has Aceoffix quick release pedals, Vans handle bar grips, H&H hinge clamps, Cane Creek Flat top brake levers, Gusset Bling Slink chain, Snot Wheels for the jockey wheels, Radar saddle, with stitching to match the bike frame and the underside painted.
I built the bike in 2020 as I had always loved the Cal look Karmann Ghia that I first saw in 1989. I thought the graphics were really cool and have had it in mind to replicate somewhere. I'm a bit of a Brompton geek too and the frame just lent itself to the graphics to that is how it came about. I have ridden it a few times but mainly wanted to keep it clean for shows. However, it was built to function so you could totally ride it with no problem. The paint finish is very robust.
All in all it is a brand new Brompton with a few hundred quids worth of trick parts, a one off custom paint job and a fair bit of bling.
I'll include the stand too.
Collection in person would be preferred - just to limit the chance of any damage but will package carefully and post if required.
