Brompton 'New York City' Limited Edition (2017)
The Brompton 'New York City' Limited Edition from 2017 is a collaboration between the British folding bike maker and Vespertine NYC, a designer collective focused on urban night riding and visibility. Limited to just 1,500 bikes worldwide, this is a purpose-built machine for commuters and city cyclists who ride after dark. The steel frame uses Brompton's signature lateral fold, so it collapses into a compact package suited to London Underground journeys, office storage, or carrying up tenement stairs. At around 11kg, it's portable enough to manage day to day without becoming a burden.
What sets this edition apart is the night-riding focus baked into every detail. The frame is painted matt black with reflective NYC-themed graphics, whilst the anodised lime-green aluminium components—hubs, crank arms, and derailleur—catch light and cut through evening gloom. A CatEye headlight comes fitted, paired with an unusually thoughtful touch: a USB-rechargeable rear saddle light mounted on specially designed light-mount saddle rails. This wasn't standard Brompton kit in 2017, and it shows the designers understood what actually keeps commuters visible and safe.
The drivetrain uses a 6-speed BWR hub combined with a derailleur, giving decent range without the weight of more gears. The 50-tooth black chainring (not the usual silver) slots into the performance theme, and Schwalbe Kojak slick tyres are fitted as standard—fast-rolling urban rubber, not the standard puncture-resistant tread you'd expect. The 2017-generation integrated brake and gear levers feel cleaner than earlier Brompton controls, with left and right shifters positioned logically for quick shifts in traffic. S-type flat handlebars come fitted, offering a sportier riding position than the M or H options, so you're bent forward slightly rather than fully upright.
The bike comes with a frame-mounted mini pump, black mudguards, and Brompton's standard front luggage carrier block. You also get a Brompton Toolkit and two carrier bags—one Ortlieb and another storage bag—so it's equipped for daily use from the moment it arrives. The extended seatpost means there's plenty of adjustment, and black rims with silver braking surfaces complete the purposeful aesthetic. Day to day, this is a commuter's tool rather than a novelty piece. The reflective graphics and bright green components genuinely help with visibility, the integrated lighting removes excuses for riding unlit, and the 6-speed drivetrain handles urban hills and flat stretches without complaint. It suits anyone commuting through city streets after sunset, or riders who value that rare blend of portability, visibility, and actual thought around what night commuters need.
