Brompton L5, 1997, Folding Bike, Excellent Condition, Red, Sturmey Archer
This is a 1997 Brompton L5 folding bike in red, a British-made steel frame design that's been sitting unused for years but remains in excellent working order. Apart from some scratches to the stickers and paint that reflect its age, the bike rides well and the gears and brakes function properly. It's worth noting that these older Bromptons are deceptively heavy at 12kg, which is noticeably heavier than current models, so it requires a bit more effort to carry up stairs or onto trains, though it still folds to Brompton's characteristically compact dimensions.
The bike has recently been serviced by an experienced mechanic, with the Sturmey Archer 5-speed rear hub cleaned and regreased. The rear tyre, chain tensioner, gear shifter and shifting cable are all new, and the seat post remains fully secure when extended and clamped. The plastic sleeve inside the seat post—a component that needs regular replacement—is currently installed. There is a small tear on the underside of the saddle visible in the final photo, but because it's underneath it doesn't affect comfort or usability. The mechanical rim brakes and hub gear system are straightforward to maintain and keep the bike simple to look after.
This folding bike is suited to anyone who needs a compact bicycle that stores easily in a flat or office, or riders who regularly combine cycling with public transport. The 16-inch wheels and 5-speed Sturmey Archer hub make it capable enough for urban commuting and mixed-use riding around town. Collection only from North London, north of Finsbury Park tube station in the N4 area.
