Brompton 5 speed 1997
This Brompton 5-speed folding bike dates from 1997 and represents a classic example of British-made folding bike engineering from that era. It's a single-owner machine with a steel frame and the characteristic compact fold that makes Bromptons practical for commuters juggling cycling with public transport or storage in tight spaces. The bike has been well used over its three decades but remains mechanically sound and ready to ride.
The drivetrain uses a Sturmey Archer 5-speed hub gear paired with a 44-tooth front chainring, which handles everyday urban riding without fuss. The recent component replacements—front chainring with right-hand crank, chain, brake calipers, brake blocks, and brake cables—mean the transmission and stopping power are in good working order. The frame itself is in good structural condition, though it was DIY resprayed black some years ago and shows primer marbling and minor scratches consistent with a bike that's been ridden regularly.
For comfort, the bike runs ergo grips (shortened to fit), a vintage Brooks leather saddle, and an extended seatpost suited to riders around 5ft 10in tall. The M-type handlebars keep the riding position upright and practical for city use. The Schwalbe Marathon tyres are in good condition and designed for durability rather than speed. Standard Brompton features include the suspension block (set to firm), folding pedals, rear rack with rollers, and full mudguards front and rear plus spray flap. The geometry and fold remain unchanged from the original 1997 design—16-inch wheels with left and right folding pedals that complete the compact package.
The bike is available for collection near Ivybridge in Devon or can be posted by Parcelforce.
