Bickerton folding bike 5 gears

The Bickerton is a classic aluminium folding bike with a 5-speed Sturmey Archer hub gear, making it a rare find among enthusiasts who appreciate these characterful machines. Built with a compact frame and fitted with 14-inch and 20-inch wheel options, it's designed to fold down for transport and storage. This particular example is in very good condition, with grey aluminium alloy construction, caliper brakes, and the distinctive double cable arrangement that feeds the Sturmey Archer gearing system.

The Bickerton occupies a particular place in folding bike history. These bikes are not like modern folder designs; they demand patience and practice to fold, and the engineering reflects an older approach to compact bikes. The folding process itself is mechanical and involved, which is why owners tend to have strong opinions about them. Some riders embrace this hands-on, mechanical character and wouldn't ride anything else. Others find the fold frustrating and impractical. There's rarely a middle ground with Bickertons, which is part of what makes them collectible today.

The 5-speed hub gear is a practical addition that sets this version apart. With a Sturmey Archer system, you get reliable, low-maintenance gearing that doesn't require constant adjustment. The caliper brakes are straightforward and easy to service. At their core, Bickertons are built to last, and the aluminium frame won't corrode. Day to day, they're honest machines that reward riders who understand what they're designed to do and accept their limitations.

This bike suits the collector or the rider who appreciates vintage folding bike engineering for what it is, without expecting modern convenience. If you value mechanical simplicity, don't mind mastering the fold, and want a piece of British folding bike history, a Bickerton in good condition like this one has real appeal.
